Honolulu Travel Tips – A Honolulu Travel Guide for your Honolulu Vacation
For many of us, Honolulu is a dream vacation that we will never forget. We have seen movies, pictures, or amazing posts on social media. Maybe we are planning that Hawaiian family vacation, a Hawaiian couples getaway. Maybe you are going to relax on the hot sand of a Hawaiian beach.
Whatever the reason you are heading to Honolulu, there are a few things that you should know before you land. These Honolulu travel tips will help you get the most out of your Honolulu vacation.
So, let’s jump into the Honolulu travel tips and get you ready for your epic Honolulu vacation. By the way, I am super jealous. I hope you enjoy your trip.
Remember, Honolulu is A Major City
Aw, you finally landed and are getting ready to start your tropical vacation. You land at Daniel K. Inouye International Airport. You are expecting to get off that 6-8 hour flight to be greeted like Elvis Presley in Blue Hawaii. Many Hawaiian tourists expect a visit to Honolulu to be an instant paradise with a cold drink and a lei around your neck. We look for endless beaches and that resort lifestyle. Much of this is true, but you have to remember that Honolulu is a major US city. There are over 350,000 permanent residents in Honolulu. This does not include those that are visiting for an epic Hawaiian vacation.
Yes, Honolulu is a great Hawaiian destination. Just remember that Honolulu is a major US city. Between the permanent residence and the tourists, there is traffic congestion just like any other major city. I guess the point here is that you are not going to instantly be set into paradise. In fact, Waikiki, one of the more popular areas can seem more like New York City, just with better views and better weather. Especially in the winter.
You are going to get the tropical breeze, gorgeous views, tropical lifestyle, great food, and all the things you are looking for. Just expect people, a lot of people.
What’s Free Parking
Before we get started, if you know of any free parking, leave it in the comments. Help us all out.
The first time I traveled to Honolulu we stayed at a very nice hotel. I booked the hotel, paid the resort fee, and when we went to check-in I was asked if I would be parking a car. I rented a car so the answer was, of course, I will be parking a car. I figure that parking would be free or included in the resort fee. I was wrong. Parking was nearly $40 per night.
All good, I am not going to let that kill my Good Vibes, I mean I was in paradise. This was a very similar story no matter the attraction we decided to visit. I was expecting to pay for parking at other attractions, but for the entire trip, I do not believe I found any free parking.
Remember, when you travel to Honolulu to budget for parking because like they say, there is no free parking here.
Find the Right Luau
While you are on your Hawaiian Vacation, I am sure you are going to want to immerse yourself in the Hawaiian culture. I mean the Hawaiian culture and way of life are some of the main reasons we all travel to Hawaii. There is no better way to do this than a good old fashioned Luau.
Now, here is the Honolulu travel tip for you. Not all Luaus are created equal. If you are going to get the most out of your experience, you are going to want to find an authentic Hawaiian Luau. Before you hit confirm on that purchase, do your research and make sure that you find the right luau for your Hawaiian Vacation.
The last thing you want is to attend an event with average food and average entertainment. I mean you can do that on the mainland in your uncle’s backyard.
Get Outside the City and Go For a Hike
Remember when we chatted about Honolulu being a major city? Yeah, it was like 2-3 minutes ago so I hope so. If not, let me remind you that 350,000 people live in Honolulu.
If you are looking to get the real tropical, get that remote feeling, make sure to go for a hike. There are hundreds of hikes near and around Honolulu that are going to give you great views of tropical forests, beaches that are so breathtaking, huge waterfalls, and just about everything you are looking for on your Honolulu Vacation. Hawaii hikes can be amazing.
It is highly recommended that you get out of the main city and go find a Volcano crater like that of the famous Diamond Head. There are great hikes not far from the center of Honolulu that will change your outlook on life. This is why you traveled to Hawaii in the first place, to get away from the hustle and bustle. This Honolulu travel tip also is budget-friendly.
Waikiki is a Great Beach, but it is not the only Hawaiian Beach
Ok, we all know about Waikiki Beach. It is iconic and the scene for so many movies, pictures, and just sounds like a really cool place to be. It is also right outside many hotels and attractions you will be visiting. Again Waikiki can feel more like New York than the tropical paradise you were expecting, but the nightlife, restaurants, and shopping can be out of this world.
Don’t get me wrong, it is one of the best Hawaiian beaches and maybe one of the best Hawaiian beaches on the planet. Remember it is only one of the many great Hawaiian beaches. It is convenient, it is clean, it is close to just about everything, and it, like all Hawaiian beaches, has it all. Make sure to take time and get away from Waikiki beach because it is crowded and you will miss some of the greatest beaches on the planet if you only stay at Waikiki.
If you are a beach lover, you will not want to miss the chance to explore the other great beaches of Honolulu. Trust me.
Remember The Honolulu History
It is very easy to forget the vast history of Honolulu, Hawaii while you visit for your Hawaiian vacation. From the moment you take your first step off the airplane and get leid, it feels like you are in another world. Even with the large crowds in Honolulu, it is easy to get caught up in the pure beauty of the city.
If you are lucky enough to take a trip to Honolulu, make sure that you take a day and visit Pearl harbor. It is a part of the history of Honolulu that shaped the future of this great city. It is one of the best attractions that you will visit because it will move you. It will touch your soul. It will change your outlook on Hawaii and possibly even your life.
When you visit Honolulu it is easy to get caught up in the great beaches, vast nightlife, and amazing time you are going to have. While you are visiting, make sure to remember the history and take it in. Honolulu is an amazing place that is full of great historical events.
Wear The Right Sunscreen
This is one of the most important Honolulu travel tips. If you are heading to Honolulu, you are going to need some sunscreen. Honolulu is further south and closer to the equator than any part of the mainland, packing sunscreen is a must. I would also expect that you are going to spend some time on the beach and soaking in the rays.
That being said, there is research that suggests that the chemicals in sunscreen have been causing damage to the coral reefs in Hawaii. It has become such an issue that Hawaii was the first state to ban the use and sale of sunscreen containing oxybenzone and octinoxate.
So before you jump over to the Hawaiian Islands, make sure that you check your sunscreen at the door. You may have to purchase coral safe sunscreen. Make sure to get your coral safe sunscreen and protect the sea turtles.
Here is the last Honolulu travel tip for you. Please skip the airport or Costco for your souvenirs. I know it is convenient, but get out and buy something from the locals in the area. Your local shop might be a little more expensive. But more importantly for you, you are going to be able to see so much more of the Island by getting out and finding the authentic shops and merchants.
This Honolulu travel tip will help you get out and see more of the Island and aid in your adventure. Trust me, this is going to make your stay in Hawaii even more memorable. Just think of that newly carved Tiki on your home office desk that takes you back to your epic trip to Honolulu. It is worth its weight in gold.
As they say, Buy Local, Give Aloha. So, well you visit and find the meaning of Aloha, make sure to give some back to the locals.
