The Best Wave of Your Life is Still Out There – Live Life to The Fullest
As I write this article, we are sitting in a global pandemic, unlike anything we have ever seen before. The past three months have changed the way we live life. We have closed schools, offices have closed, and we all have to wear masks everywhere we go. 2020 will go down in history as the forgotten year. However, this pandemic has also given many of us the ability to look deep into our souls and find out how to live life to the fullest.
I sit here in front of my computer wondering when things will be normal again. I wonder if I will be able to travel to Hawaii for the first time (Side note: Hawaii has become a dream, not a destination). I wonder what the long term effects the pandemic is going to be on our kids and society. I then remember that we only live once and better times are ahead of us.
The surfer quote, the best wave of your life is still out there, is more true today than ever before. However, if we are going to live life to the fullest, there are a few things that we need to change. So, let’s explore how we are going to live a life worth living and how we are going to live life to the fullest. Even in a year that we all want to forget.
Change Your Mindset
Your mind is a very powerful tool. Your mind can work for us or it can work against us. But if we are going to live life the way we intend, we need to change the way we think.
Yes, this is easier said than done. That is for sure. But changing your mindset starts with small things. It is not going to happen overnight. It might not even happen this year. It is going to take time to change your mindset.
In the past, I have struggled with focus. I tend to be very scatterbrained. In the past, this has kept me from achieving some of my goals. If you know me, I was once a proud and struggling marketing agency owner. The main reason I struggled was because of focus. I would start new ventures, have limited success, and then stop, only to build something new or pursue a new opportunity.
I saw how this was an issue. Not only did it keep me from maximizing my agency, but it also put a ton of unneeded stress on my family. The new ideas or opportunities would take time from the ones I loved because I would be working on something I thought was cool. Neglecting the people that mean the most to me.
Finally, I decided to get a “real” job. This made me focus on one thing, not hundreds.
Over the last year and a half, I have been able to find a new sense of focus. This focus has helped me start Hawaiian Island Clothing because I know I can only focus on one thing. In fact, I have made a pact with myself to give this venture 2 years. I will not start anything new and focus 100% of my free time on Hawaiian Island Clothing. For me, this is a big deal.
Ok, let’s wrap this point up. By changing my mindset, I am starting to see results. I am starting to help others through Hawaiian Island Clothing. I have changed my mindset and started to live life to the fullest. I am happier now than ever.
The point here is that it has taken nearly 2 years to change my mindset. If I can do it, so can you. It will be worth it in the end. Trust me.
During this global pandemic, it has been hard to keep in touch with people. For example, my son was born on July 5th. As long as that little guy can remember he has had a 4th of July birthday party, fireworks, hot dogs, water gun fights, the whole thing.
This year, we could not do many of those things. Firework displays were canceled, group gathers were looked down, and the day was just going to be blah.
So, we decided that the best thing to do was get him a BB gun (yes, we know, he will shoot his eye out) and head out to the forest. We were able to hike around a local lake and have a really good time as a family.
It was also a reminder of how many people love the little guy. The number of text messages received, delivered presents, and Facetimes helped make his day a little more special.
What’s the point? Good question.
Make sure to take time to love the people around you. It is our belief at Hawaiian Island Clothing that Aloha is a way of life. The meaning of Aloha is more than just a greeting, Aloha is a blueprint to live your life. So, make it a point to remember those around you, your loved ones, and old friends. Reach out and say hi from time to time. You never know when someone needs a little Aloha in their life.
Be the Aloha. It will help you live life to the fullest.
Taking risks can be hard for many people. It is hard for us to ride the waves and go with the flow. We tend to look for safety, we tend to take the easy way out. We tend to hold back from our potential because of the safety net we have created.
Before we move on, I want to make sure we are on the same page. If we take risks, we are not always going to be successful and find the life we are looking for. I also believe that this is okay. These failures and setbacks are part of the process of living life to the fullest.
Another very personal story alert.
Back in high school, I would ignore this very pretty girl because, well, I was a jerk. Senior year, she wanted to go to prom with me. I chose the easy route. I went with a friend from my click and ignored this hottie. I figured I would have more fun with my group of friends and let’s be honest, it was easier to hang with friends than build a new relationship.
Shortly after graduation, I saw this pretty girl at a party. We started to talk and I found her to be pretty interesting. I guess she was pretty cool.
I finally took the risk and took her out a few times. Things went really good, maybe too good. After dating for about 3 years we eventually got married. I am glad to say we celebrated our 15 year anniversary this year.
I know the classic love story right? Totally awesome dude gets the hot chick. I know, right out of a movie.
Here is where things get really interesting. We were planning on celebrating in Hawaii for our 15 year anniversary. As the global pandemic hit, the Islands were closed. We were not able to go. Bummer, right?
Yes, we could be upset, we could be unhappy, or we could look to live life to the fullest. We started Hawaiian Island Clothing with the purpose to help children that are being forced into slavery. We now look at Hawaii as a dream (much like these children look at being free), not a destination or vacation.
So, the risk I took nearly 20 years ago will hopefully help thousands of children find Aloha. It will help them live a life that is worth living.
Personally, I do not think you can live life to its fullest without taking a risk from time to time. Taking risks is the only way to truly live life to the fullest.
Find your Purpose
When I was younger, I thought that this was always a cliche. I would ask, “Who in their right mind can actually do what they love, find their purpose, and make enough money to live.” At the time I was out of graduate school working 50 – 60 hours and making really good money.
As I matured, I realized that finding your purpose does not have to be a full-time gig. Maybe it is like Hawaiian Island Clothing, a side hustle that you hope grows into a full-time thing. But your purpose does not have to be your day job or primary source of income.
Here is the skinny, I donate 51% of all proceeds from Hawaiian Island Clothing to help children caught in slavery and trafficking. I do this because over the years and after having 4 kids, I just believe that this is the right thing to do. Mostly I can’t imagine my own kids in a situation that these kids are in. Nobody, I mean nobody should have to live like this. If I can put forth the effort, design some shirts, and help kids, I have found my purpose, I have helped kids.
Yes, I hope Hawaiian Island Clothing becomes a full-time gig in the future. It is not so I can quit my day job, I mean I like where I work. It is because it means that we (you and me) have helped thousands of children. We have helped thousands of kids find aloha.
There are thousands of people that volunteer every day for a cause. Your purpose gives you a reason to be a better person, it helps you meet others with similar interests, it helps drive you to be a better person.
So, start small, sometimes the smallest things make the biggest impact.
Take Time to Smell The Flowers
When your time comes to an end, you are going to look back and reflect. You are going to get to the end of the road and see one of two things. You are either going to see a person that you wanted to be or a person that you did not want to become. I don’t know one person that is going to say, “You know, I wish I really worked more. I really regret taking those epic vacations to Hawaii. I never really liked hanging out with friends and family”
I just turned 38 and I look back on the happy memories. There are a few that stick out, but none of them have anything to do with working over the weekends or making more money. All of my best memories are hanging out with friends and family, vacations, and the good things I have done in my life.
As you live life to the fullest, make sure to take time to smell the flowers. These are the times you will look back and remember. These are the times that build your legacy.
We all know people that hold a grudge. We have heard the stories about families not talking for years because of some insignificant thing. Here is my advice, let it go. Don’t hold on to the things that drive you crazy. Remember, you can not change people. People have to choose to change. Be the example. Be the person that they want to become.
Enough about that. Just let go.
Keep You Vibes Positive
Over the past few months, we have come across so much change. It is starting to affect the way that we interact with people. The lack of meeting for coffee with friends, grabbing lunch to catch up, or celebrating kids’ birthdays has taken a toll on society as a whole.
In order to live life to the fullest, you have to keep the vibes positive. This includes your thoughts, your actions, and the way you go about your life. Let’s talk very briefly about one easy way to keep the vibes positive.
Research suggests that children, the most carefree, positive vibes loving bunch on the planet earth, smile up to 400 times per day. The same research suggests that adults only smile about 20 times per day. Yes, as an adult we have more responsibilities and stress. So this makes sense.
The same research goes to explain that your smile is the best way to keep the vibes positive. Your smile can illuminate a room, change your mood, reduce your blood pressure, and so many other great things.
Remember to wear your smile as you look to keep the vibes positive. It will not only make you feel better, but it will also make others around you feel better. A smile is a great way to keep the vibes positive and live life to the fullest.
Get Started and Live Life to the Fullest
I hope that this article has shown you a few ways to live life to the fullest and I truly wish you the best life possible. Life is short and we only get one chance, make sure it counts. No matter your age, the surfer quote, the best wave of your life is still out there, reminds us that we have much more to look forward to in life.
To wrap up, I am going to encourage you to get started. Choose to live life to the fullest and follow the Hawaiian proverbs. It starts with you, nobody can do this for you. You have to get started and commit to it. Your time is now!
I personally hope that you find your aloha,
